From the day that Jennifer could speak it was highly noticable that there was something in her that gave her the ability to pick up language in a quick fashion. She spoke her first words way sooner then any normal kid would. And by the time all the other kids had the basics of Federation standard implanted in their heads Jennifer already was capable of expressing herself in both Federation Standard and the Bulgarian languages.
So it was only logical that when the time came Jennifer chose to specialize in Communications on the Starfleet Academy, rapidly going through the basic years, at least in the top 30% of her basic classes and top of her class in Communications. She quickly learned several languages from other students and the classes, A Vulcan friend told her everything about the Vulcan Language, because the classes only tought so much of it. Since the Vulcans had joined the Federation and all could talk Federation Standard as well as the technology of the Universal Translator they didn't spend much time on it.
After three years of theoreticle training on the Starfleet Academy in Western Europe Jennifer was placed on the USS Intrepid as Communications Officer. Having very little self esteem she had a lot of trouble fitting in and making new friends. But when she saw another red shirt drinking himself to shit at the bar looking like he was having a miserable time something took over and Jennifer cared for the man, wanting to give him a shoulder to cry out on.
She got more then she bargained for, the man she supported that night came back the next night and the night after. They got into a relationship and are now married and proud parents of a seven year old daughter. After Alexandra was born Jennifer took a step back from her work, she had always said she wanted to be there for her kids when they needed her and she wasn't about to break this promise.
This is why, although she had several jobs in Starfleet for quite some time, she is still "only" an Ensign. Jennifer doesn't really care about her rank and doesn't go through much to try and get a promotion. When her husband got the command of the USS Pegasus she followed him and at his request she became Acting Chief of Communications, only until, so she said, Caelen could find a more capable and worthy Chief of Communications. |
